Lovers of the vegetable will get their fix from British farmers a fortnight early as a bumper crop hits the supermarkets. A warm spring has led to an estimated crop of 6,500 tons of asparagus, up by about 500 tons on last year, according to British Asparagus, the industry organisation. The glut, which equates to 340m spears, has prompted retailers such as Tesco to cut the price. It is also good news for UK farmers who are set to earn £30m from the harvest.
