THE RESULTS OF THE BREXIT NEGOTIATIONS ARE OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE TO KENT’S FARMERS, writes Pat Crawford in Kent Business. The county’s farmers are a vital part of the national industry which is directly responsible for 475,000 jobs and contributes about £9bn to the UK economy each year. Kent’s farmers are also inextricably linked to tourism, the country’s fastest growing sector. There must be recognition of the importance of a seasonal workforce from outside the UK, as the global population booms demand for food will increase at a time when climate change is taking a toll on yields. Technology will play an increasingly important role, and in the meantime we must support our farmers by buying locally wherever possible.
