Malling Centenary strawberry surpasses 59m plants

A VARIETY OF STRAWBERRY DEVELOPED IN KENT IS PROVING ONE OF THE SUMMER’S SUCCESS STORIES, reports Kent Online.  It is believed that the Malling Centenary, developed at NIAB EMR, will have toppled the 59m mark this summer for the number of plants cultivated – up 15m on last year.  First released in 2013, it is a product of the first tranche of the East Malling Strawberry Breeding Club.  It was named to celebrate a century of fruit science and innovation in East Malling and is a “fabulous tasting strawberry and a very strong performer for growers.”  The commercial success of the variety is now helping to retain world-class science here in Kent.
